SSL-revolution: Google lowers the ranking of websites without SSL
As part of its obligation to protect users searching for information, Google recently announced that HTTPS pages will now be indexed by default, even if their HTTP equivalents exist.
One of Google’s main aims is to make sure that users are always taken to a page with a secure connection. To achieve this goal, Google specialists have decided to index only HTTPS-pages. If two versions of pages, i.e. HTTP and HTTPS, are available then HTTPS pages get priority in indexing.
This is a significant change to last year when Google appealed directly to webmasters for help identifying and indexing HTTPS URL addresses. Now, Google is able to find HTTPS URL addresses without any outside help.
According to an announcement by Google, "Visiting a website should be a private communication between the user and the site, protected from eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle attacks or modification of data. For this reason we are determined to promote HTTPS everywhere ".
This suggests that in the future we should expect the full transition to HTTPS for all web-sites. Do it today, don’t be left on the sidelines of technical progress.
It is also worth remembering that the transfer to HTTPS brings advantages in terms of SEO, as has been pointed out by Google representatives. Sites which have an SSL-certificate installed are better ranked in search results, allowing you to obtain higher positions.
If you run your business online, it is important to always keep an eye on such innovations, because your competitors will be!
